3Ddesign is a foundations
course intended to introduce the student to various materials, tools and
processes while exploring basic concepts involving the elements and
principles of three-dimensional design. Students are given problem
assignments aimed at developing formal aesthetic ideas as well as
technical skills. Both representational and abstract ideas are
investigated through a hands-on classroom experience. Materials such as
(but in no way limited to) cardboard, plaster, wood and fiber are
explored. Students are prompted to develop a vocabulary of terms
pertaining to 3D design for use during discussion and critiques.
Development of an informed personal reaction to the visual arts
based upon critical analysis and the ability to effectively communicate
such ideas is desired along with the student acquiring an overall
appreciation for contemporary art. Sample projects range from carving from
a plaster block, plaster body casting and
wood construction to social commentary and concept-driven works.
